Lessons We’ve Learned in Transportation…

... And how they might affect you.

Recently, we’ve had a little bad luck related to our Dump Truck. If you read our article in June, “Making Lemonade Out of Lemons”, you’ll know that we found ourselves in a position of learning about an unfamiliar way of delivering. The truck and dump trailer were a new experience for us, so we had to do some research to be sure we knew how to be safe and legal on the roads.

We didn’t expect to learn as much as we did and realized it might save you, our customers, a lot of stress and hassle to have a refresher on carrying bulk, plants, and hardgoods on Michigan roads.

Let’s start with the definition of a Commercial Vehicle: “…includes all motor vehicles used for the transportation of passengers, for hire, or constructed or used for the transportation of goods, wares or merchandise…” Most of our customers have vehicles that transport goods, wares, or merchandise. I haven’t met a customer yet that relies only on deliveries from us alone. So, all of you have “Commercial Vehicles”, which means you have “Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers”. Definition, “Any person (including the owner of a company) who operates a commercial motor vehicle.” And the final definition in my list is the GVWR, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, the value specified by the manufacturer to be the safe loaded weight of a single vehicle. These are the basics, which, likely, you already know.

Here is what you may not know…

This means that our Chevy 2500 towing our Load Trail for business purposes requires a CDL-A driver.  In researching our new dump trailer, we discovered that most of the tandem axle trailers being marketed to contractors have a gross vehicle weight rating at or just over 10,000 lbs.

So, what are the consequences if you’re caught with higher-rated vehicles driven by an under-licensed driver? You get “red-flagged”, meaning you must park your rig where it sits until you have a legal driver to move it.

The good news is that being pulled over just to check that the driver is licensed for the GVWR rarely happens. The bad news is that being pulled over for other infractions can be compounded by an under-licensed driver. One of the most common ways to attract unwanted attention is to have your load incorrectly restrained. This means that tarping and using the correct straps for tying down your load is critical. And that… is a whole other article.

Making Lemonade Out of Lemons

Christensen's Dump Truck

Unfortunately, in business (and in life) bad stuff can happen. We do our best to be safe and conscientious, but, sometimes, it doesn’t matter how careful we are. Recently, we had some bad luck that left our dump truck out-of-service. Don’t worry! We’re so grateful that our employee is okay, just the dump truck sustained damage.

If you were looking for a bulk delivery in the last week, we’re sorry that we couldn’t deliver.  But now, we’re back in the bulk delivery biz!

'Black Betty' Dump Trailer

Still awaiting a nickname from our shipping department, it’s a triple-axle, 21,000 lb hydraulic dump trailer. Capable of hauling up to 16 yards of light bulk (mulch) or 5 yards of heavy bulk (topsoil, sand, gravel, compost mix), it’s ready to hit the road. The delivery area and cost ($45) remain the same.

If you need a bulk delivery, they’re easy to set up. Just call into the Plant (888-454-TREE) or Hardscape (734-454-1412) Centers and our friendly customer service staff will be happy to get you on the schedule.

It is so clean and new, you almost don’t want to put gravel in… almost.

P.S. If you have a nickname suggestion, let me know.

Introducing… “Brutus”

Brutus

Christensen’s Plant Center is very excited to welcome "Brutus" to our hard-working family. But first, let me tell you about some of our other family members.

Each one of these family members was selected to make getting your landscape material to you efficiently and professionally. There are: Betsey, Agnes, Orange Crush, Big Blue, The Twins, Red Brick, Gray Flat, Lola Ryder, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 - among others. Obviously some of us here like nicknames and in this case we have given nicknames to most of our delivery equipment.

We have three box trailers that each have drop decks and large side doors to make unloading much easier. We have five flatbed trailers designed to haul large loads of trees, shrubs and other nursery stock. We have two more flats that are designed to haul brick, wall block and other hardscape materials while toting one of our two Moffett forklift machines that we use to unload hardscape product for you on your job site.

Moffett

We currently have five semi-trucks ranging from Ol’ Betsey, the matriarch of our fleet, to the Twin Freightliners, to Agnes - our first heavy hauler - and finally, our newest member, Brutus.

Brutus

Brutus is a real life Michigan Special. He's a 13 speed, 18K front axle with 44K rears. 575HP with turbos that whistle when idling. Brutus is set to haul the biggest of brick loads without breaking a sweat. He’s a prefect addition to our BIG truck family.

Brutus

So no matter what landscape material you need or where you need it, we have a family member to get it to you.

As a welcome to the family celebration, if you tell your salesperson that “Brutus is a Brute” we will waive the delivery charge on your next delivery. This offer is limited to one per customer and only good until 11-29-2019.

Coming soon to our family... “Axle"... Stay tuned.
